ADELANTO — In the quest to build a better rocket engine, an Adelanto company has invented a new gas-propelled engine that Eric Schmidt says is light years ahead of its time. Schmidt, the current mayor of Hesperia, is part of a team of engineers and rocket scientists at Exquadrum, a private contracting company that works on behalf of various components of the Department of Defense. ADELANTO — A multi-million dollar contract from the federal government for a new air-delivered bunker-buster bomb capable of penetrating six feet of reinforced concrete will include technology developed in the High Desert. The Pentagon recently awarded the $7.2 million contract to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Aerospace, which furthers the development of a new munitions concept, the aerospace industry news website FlightGlobal.com reported. ADELANTO – For the small Adelanto firm named Exquadrum Inc. — that’s pseudo Latin for “thinking outside the box” — rocket science is their bread and butter. The research and development engineering firm is headquartered at the Southern California Logistics Airport and its main office sits in a sleepy corner of the Adelanto desert a few miles from SCLA. Exquadrum has done contract work with NASA, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, and the Pentagon’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency. They’ve also done commercial work in the space tourism industry and with major companies like Raytheon, National Testing Systems and ATK Aerospace Group. (more…)
SAN BERNARDINO – A handful of High Desert individuals, businesses and organizations were among 29 total nominees announced for the 23rd annual San Bernardino County Education Medal of Honor. ADELANTO – As a group of wide-eyed Boy Scouts from the High Desert watched the firing of multiple rockets, one engineer hoped he was looking at the scientists of the future. “My ultimate goal is to have one of these scouts come back in about six years and tell me that they’ve chosen a career in science because of our influence,” said Eric Schmidt, co-founder of Exquadrum Inc. in Adelanto. APPLE VALLEY – Students, staff, local public officials and industry professionals gathered for an open house of Apple Valley High School’s new Precision Machining Academy on Thursday afternoon. The state-of-the-art computerized manufacturing shop was created to give AVHS students a leg up in the job market as well as incorporate applied math and science learning, Principal Dustin Conrad said.
